Orion, Someone Not Something

In January 2025, a local dog walker spotted a young golden rooster alone near the entrance to a woodland trail in Sherborn. He was exposed to subfreezing temperatures and had nowhere safe to go. The following morning, Kathy and Animal Caregiver Emma returned with a small enclosure to help safely catch him. He was wary and cold, but fortunately had only limited frostbite. Based on the development of his spurs, he was believed to be less than a year old. He was named Orion. At the sanctuary, Orion grew into a happy, friendly rooster who formed close bonds with both people and animals. He was social, trusting and known for following his favorite caregivers. Later, Orion developed ongoing foot problems after breaking his middle toe. He received pain medication, regular veterinary care and daily treatments from his caregivers. Despite these challenges, he continued moving around, remained bright and showed the same trusting nature that made him so loved. Orion’s story also highlights an important reality: abandoning roosters outdoors is not a humane option. Domesticated roosters are vulnerable to predators, weather and starvation, and many are surrendered because chicks sold as female are sometimes later discovered to be male. Orion received the care, safety and compassion every rescued animal deserves. He was truly someone, not something. Orion has since passed, but his life, personality and the relationships he formed will not be forgotten.
