Dani, A Leap Toward Life

Dani was born on a Smithfield factory farm in North Carolina. Like millions of other piglets, she was taken away from her mother when she was just a baby and loaded onto a transport truck to be fattened up for slaughter. But that wasn’t going to be Dani’s story. Somehow, as the truck sped down the highway, Dani and another piglet, later named Mindy, jumped from the trailer onto a highway going 60 mph. It is almost impossible to imagine what instinct led them to do it, but they were clearly fighting for their lives. Dani miraculously survived the fall. Mindy was critically injured. Local people found the two piglets on the side of the road and rushed them to Sisu Refuge, where they received emergency veterinary care. Despite everyone’s efforts, Mindy died from her injuries. Dani survived and was given the chance she had risked everything for. A few days later, another pig jumped from another Smithfield truck and was brought to Sisu. The two quickly became inseparable, and they both came to Rosie’s Farm Sanctuary to live in sanctuary for the rest of their lives. Today, Dani spends her days rooting in the grass, napping in soft bedding, and cuddling with Sunshine and the rest of the pig family. She is gentle, curious, incredibly smart, and now knows she can trust the people who love and care for her. Dani’s leap was a leap toward life. Every time visitors meet her, they are reminded that farmed animals are not products or commodities. They are individuals, each with a personality, relationships, fears, and an incredible capacity to heal when given the chance.
