Mado and Buyo

The two foals (Mado and Buyo) were rescued after its parents were killed for the illegal meat trade. The center has become a sanctuary for stolen donkeys intercepted by police, providing rehabilitation before they are rehomed. When they first arrived at Mwea, they wouldn't leave the side of a fellow survivor, forming a deep connection that became the foundation of his healing. Now thriving in safety, his curious personality shines through as he greets sanctuary staff every morning with a loud, welcoming bray. Mado and Buyo’s resilience proves that with security, food, and veterinary care, even the most traumatized survivors can find joy again. Donkeys are in crisis all around the world. This is almost entirely due to the demand for their skins in China, although donkey slaughter is illegal in Kenya, it still continues. Mwea Donkey Sanctuary is a project of the Animal Protection and Resource Center (APRC), a registered nonprofit organization based in Kenya. Guided by the principles of compassion, justice, education, and nonviolence, APRC works through grassroots activism, public education, policy advocacy, community empowerment, and direct animal protection to address animal exploitation and suffering. Through Mwea Donkey Sanctuary, APRC focuses on rescuing, rehabilitating, and protecting donkeys affected by neglect, abandonment, injury, overwork, and cruelty, while promoting responsible donkey care, humane handling, veterinary support, and community awareness to improve the welfare and dignity of working and vulnerable donkeys.
